I've done that before in my book, and it's so much fun! Plus, I still get to enjoy the hobby/passion a little myself by writing about it! :)
That's the most fun part of writing - getting to do things with my characters that I myself could/would not do! It's a bit of an escape, which makes the extra research worth it.
